How to survive your child’s temper tantrums in public

To this date I can only remember 1 temper tantrum my daughter threw in public when she was about 2 years old. It was horrible enough in the middle of walmart. I became THAT parent. Knowing her temperament and why she was crying, I just let her sit and cry it out for a few minutes then picked her up and walked away.

It’s not easy for a parent when kids have temper tantrums. It is not only embarrassing, but also frustrating for a parent. Here are 8 Temper Tantrum Survival Strategies (from that may help.

1. Keep your cool and deal with the tantrum as calmly as possible. Remember, you are your child’s role model for handling anger, notes Ray Levy, PhD, coauthor of Try and Make Me! Simple Strategies That Turn Off the Tantrums and Create Cooperation (Rodale Press, 2001). Though it may be tempting to yell at or lecture your child, Levy advises parents to take a “clip it” or “zip it” approach. State your position calmly, he says, and make it short and to the point.

2. Walk away from her when she’s having an outburst. If you don’t feel comfortable leaving the scene, stay nearby, but keep busy, suggests Dr. Tolmas. Don’t make eye contact or start arguing with your child. If she sees her tantrum isn’t having an effect on you, she’ll most likely stop.

3. When your child is having a public tantrumpick him up and carry him calmly to a safe place. Take him to your car or a public bathroom, where he can blow off steam. Be careful not to overreact or lash out at your child because you’re embarrassed. Once you’re in a quieter place, calmly explain your position, and try to ignore the tantrum until it stops. Sometimes just touching or stroking a child will soothe him. If your child continues to scream, place him securely in his car seat and head for home.

4. Talk in soothing tones. If your child throws a tantrum in a place that you just can’t leave (like an airplane), talk to him in a quiet tone, suggests Levy. If it helps to keep you calm, repeat the same phrase over and over.

5. Don’t try to reason with a child who’s having a tantrum. He is so emotionally out of control that this won’t work, Levy notes.

6. Use humor or distraction to draw your child out of a tantrum. Make a funny face or point out something interesting to take your child’s attention away from the source of frustration.

7. In some cases, give in to the tantrum (within reason). Sometimes this is a smart strategy, notes says Dr. Hagan. While bribery (“I’ll give you some ice cream if you stop crying”) should never be an option, if you want to have a peaceful car ride, you might give in to your child’s request to hear the same tape over and over again.

8. Don’t ignore aggressive actions. If your child is behaving aggressively during a tantrum — kicking, hitting, biting, throwing, or breaking things — take action. If possible, remove your child from the source of his anger, and hold him or give him some time alone to calm down and regain control. For children old enough to understand, a time-out may be effective.

Many children just seem to snap out of a tantrum as quickly and inexplicably as they got into it in the first place. Once the tantrum is over, Dr. Hagan suggests going to your child, giving him a hug and a kiss, telling him you love him, and moving on. Dwelling on the outburst only makes them feel bad and may even cause the tantrum to start up again.

I know it’s easier to react immediately to the tantrum than look at it calmly, but if this a frequent occurrence for your child, it won’t hurt to come up with a strategy to better prepare yourself when it happens.

Would you eat on the toilet? Photo of woman breastfeeding on toilet sparks outrage

Have you seen this image of a woman breastfeeding her toddler while sitting on the toilet with her pants down. It has gone viral online it’s of Elisha Wilson Beach, wife of TV actor Michael Beach who recently posted this photo of herself on instagram with the message:

‘This is motherhood and it ain’t always pretty. What’s your #momtruth? #motherhood #motherhoodaintpretty #tmi #confessionsofamom #ididthat #iamnotsorry”

Elisha Wilson Beach is a mother of two and wife of Michael Beach who is known for his roles on Sons of Anarchy, Third Watch and ER.

The photo has drawn many criticisms about this multi-tasking momma calling it distasteful, unsanitary, and commenting on the dirty bathroom amongst other things. It has also drawn many supporters who applaud Beach for portraying a real-life depiction of motherhood.

I am a complete supporter of breastfeeding but I am disturbed by this image of her breastfeeding on the toilet and posing for the picture.

Elisha recently spoke out about the photo on her blog My Life is a Beach and this is what she said:

“Who knew breastfeeding on the toilet, taking a picture of it and posting it to share with my measly 422 followers on Instagram and 992 Facebook friends would send the internet into a frenzy? And oh, the judgments about me as a mother … Ouch! Dealing with motherhood with acceptance and a sense of humour has often been my saving grace and I thought this picture captures that perfectly. I didn’t post it to make a huge statement about motherhood. I posted it to share my truth as a mum and help my mum friends feel comfortable with their truth.”

Hmm..that’s great Elisha, I do first of all admire your intention to shed some reality onto motherhood. Many of us mothers can relate to the crazy, unpredictable and messy moments of parenthood and how we do whatever is necessary to sometimes get through the day, even if it means skipping baths and giving them bread and cheese for dinner or letting them watch an extra episode of their favourite TV show. However, I have to side with your critics that I find this photo is distasteful. I exclusively breastfed my eldest and now doing the same with my second one. There was never a moment in all the crazy days I have had when I have had to feed either of them while sitting on the toilet at any stage. There is no shame in breastfeeding anywhere, but what makes you want to sit there with your chachas hanging and doing your business and at the same time provide nutrition to your child? I guess you would, if you are the type who likes to have your own dinner while you take a dump.

Sorry I know that was harsh. But I’m tired of this sh*tty addiction people have to photograph every aspect of their life and post it on social media.

Easy homemade waffles with oats

Happy Friday everyone!

I found this simple recipe in my Big Boss Grill Recipe book and have made it a few times already. I love how the ingredients are simple and of course healthier than store-bought ones, especially when you enjoy waffles frequently. The only thing I kept forgetting to do was to take proper pictures, so please your imagination. They actually taste great and my picky 3 year old loves them just as much.

If you have a waffle iron or the waffle attachment in your sandwich maker you can easily make this. I love my Big Boss grill which comes with several plates that you can snap on and off.

The recipe calles for blueberries but I make some without blueberries as well. With these proportions I get about 6 medium size waffles. They are quite thicker than the regular Eggo waffles you buy at the store.

Here’s what you need:

2/3 cup all purpose flour

1/2 cup quick cooking oats

1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon brown sugar

2/3 cup milk

1 egg

1/4 cup vegetable oil

1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

3/4 up fresh blueberries

In a large mixing bowl combine flour, oats, baking powder, salt and brown sugar.

In a medium bowl whisk milk, egg, oil and lemon juice.

Stir into dry ingredients and mix until blended.

Here’s where I split up the batch and make some waffles without blueberries. Just pour 1/4 cup batter into each waffle plate. On my Big Boss grill I close the lid, lock it and and cook for 5 minutes. Then remove with a spatula.

If you would like blueberries, you can mix some in the batter (I have used both fresh and frozen and they turn out fine).

I could never get a good photo before we gobble them up. I froze a few of the blueberry waffles (they freeze well) last time I made some, so this is all I could salvage. The batter turns dark once you mix in blueberries, hence I make some without them for my picky daughter.



How I went from a size 4 to a size 10 in just a few minutes

I am quite happy with my body. After 2 kids I am still happy about it. Give or take those dreaded moments of realization about my mommy tummy, I am still happy about it. If you’ve read a previous post of mine you’ll know that I don’t care about losing those extra baby pounds.

I have learned how to choose clothes that look good on my body over the years. I never stressed about exercising to get in shape after my pregnancies as I prefer to spend that time with my kids and just stay healthy by leading an active lifestyle. However one skirt single-handedly has forced me to get back in shape.

This is what started it all…

I fell in love with his skirt at H&M as soon as I laid my eyes on it. Ahhh…love it.


I was always a size 4 at H&M before I had my daughter. After her birth I bounced back and forth between a size 4 and 6 depending on the outfit. After the recent birth of my son, I assumed I was still a 6. So recently when I saw this skirt I grabbed it in a size 6 but it DID NOT FIT. Not really panicking, i got a size 8 but it still didn’t fit. I had to go up to a size 10.

It wasn’t the number that bothered me so much as the fact that even the size 10 was snug and did not look so good on me. I have worn this style of skirt many times. But this time around I guess I had lost a lot of my pregnancy weight except that mommy tummy, so the skirt was snug at the waist but way too big everywhere else, which made it look sloppy. That’s it, I decided that I need to get moving.

I’m on a mission ladies…all because of this skirt. I don’t usually stress over outfits that don’t look good on me. But I really really want this skirt! I am determined to wear it on an upcoming vacation so I’ve decided to walk, dance and do whatever it takes to be able to wear it. Hey maybe I”ll go back and even get a size 8 when I’m done.

I guess this skirt was just the push I needed to get back in shape.

Now that I’ve declared it to all of you, I guess I need to get moving. So check back in a couple of months to see how I did.
